The last few years have seen huge progress made within the nutrient recovery field. A number of international projects have been financed within the framework of Horizon 2020 and other relevant programmes such as LIFE, Interreg, and others.

These projects have made the obtention of relevant results, such as different consolidated and innovative technologies, reliable and safe fertilising products, methodologies for the evaluation of sustainability, relevant market data, or relevant information relevant for the policy makers and other key stakeholders.

Results obtained from research and innovation projects however are not always sufficiently known, adopted, or exploited.

Also, the European Commission’s strategy recognises the importance of nutrient recovery for the global sustainability of the EU.

In this regard, since 2020, the European Commission has taken different measures to support research, innovation, and implementation in this sector. Among the main examples feature the publication of the Green Deal - including, amongst other things, the Farm to Fork strategy - the EU’s action plan for the circular economy, the EU’s new regulation on fertiliser products, or the Horizon Europe programme which includes a mission on soil and food health aimed at reducing nutrient loss and improving the efficiency of nutrient use in agriculture among other objectives.

The aim of this Fertimanure final event is to discuss the main results of R&D projects that have been financed within the remit of the recycling of nutrients and have either been completed or are about to reach completion, by highlighting the significant impacts they have made and the obstacles they have encountered, and to define the way forward henceforth.

The Fertimanure project is one of the R&D projects financed within this sector that is reaching completion. Hence the organising of this final event during which we will be delighted and proud to share our progress and results with you.
